It doesn’t take long for toddlers to figure out that tantrums in public is the most effective way to get everything they desire or if they look for more comfortable feeling, since parents usually tend to give what their toddler want just to avoid the people’s eyes.
Knowing the tantrums trigger. Things that could trigger tantrums, such as hunger, boredom, fatigue, overstimulation, or over scheduled should be avoided before the tantrums come. Make sure your toddler has enough meal to eat, enough interesting stuff to see and play, enough energy to spare and share with you as an adult.
Distract, distract, and distract. Although you have tried to prevent tantrums by avoiding the trigger, your toddler probably still feel very bored and nothing is amazed him. Try to distract him with something he wants (and also you want) – “Ok, let see if we can skip this groceries shopping for later, and now we go to the book store for you” – or try to distract him with out-of-mind or out-of-sight method – taking him away as quick as possible, when he wants to play with the arrangement of tuna cans.
