Sometimes it isn’t easy for parents to recognize when they’ve been pushing their child too hard. While a few parents quite consciously set about trying to create a superchild, most parents aren’t even aware that they are pushing – much less that the pushing has a negative effect. Watch for warning signs that your child may be under too much pressure:
- Little or no time for free, unstructured play.
- Anxiety, tension, moodiness, fatigue, irritability, aggressiveness, frequent crying or whining, frequent tantrums, depressing, and lack of enthusiasm.
- Problems or issues concerning sleeping and eating.
- Headaches, stomachaches, tremors, tics, or other (possibly) psychosomatic ailments. Note that, of course, illness should always be checked out by the doctor in the case of such symptoms.
- An inability to play well or get along with peers.
Any one of these signs, whether it indicates excessive pushing or another concern in your child’s life, deserve attention. If the underlying cause seems to be too much parental pressure, you should reevaluate the situation and consider easing up.
